I heard an interesting way of approximating a ponies weight today, which is always a tricky thing to guess at particularly when it’s for medication.
Measure the distance from the top of the tail to the shoulder in inches, then multiply it by the measurement around the girth squared, again in inches, then divide by 600 which will give you the weight in kilo’s.
The rare breeds sale at The Thainstone Centre, Inverurie, Aberdeenshire on 12/03/2016 which is mainly all types of poultry, hatching eggs, etc, also has horses, ponies and tack, quite often includes a few Shetland Ponies.
The G.E.M.S (Group for enthusiasts of Miniature Shetlands) 2015 championship was won by Stuart and Heather Wilson from the Mingulay Stud at Alford in Aberdeenshire, collecting 16 G.E.M.S. rosettes. Stuart is something of a Shetland Pony legend in Scotland who has spent many years as a member of the Breed Society Council, as well as being active in supporting many scottish shows. Heather has been equally busy over the years and exhibits the ponies. Heather is a Shetland Pony judge and a current member of the Breed Society Council.
The runner-up was Margaret Greaves from the Chapelhill Stud in Aberdeenshire.
