The Shetland Pony Stud Book Society was formed in 1890. The first president was the 6th Marquis of Londonderry ( who’s father was the founder of the Londonderry Stud ). The vice president was Gavin Hadden of Aberdeen and George Bruce of Aberdeen was secretary & treasurer, twelve other members made up the council, seven of whom lived in Shetland. ,
The Council consisted of :- John Anderson, John Bruce, Mr R Brydon, John Cragie, Anderson Manson, John J R Meiklejohn, Alexander Sanderson all from Shetland. …. Lord Arthur Cecil of Tunbridge, James Duncan of Inverness, C Macpherson-Grant of Forres, Ranald Macdonald of Cluny Castle, Aberdeenshire, Sir Allen R Mackenzie of Ballater.
An Editing Committee consisted of :- Chairman Gavin Hadden, John Anderson, Mr R Brydon, C Macpherson Grant, Ranald Macdonald, John J R Meiklejohn, Alexander Sandison.
There was also a General Purpose Committee :- Chairman C Macpherson-Grant, John Bruce, Mr R Brydon, Lord Arthur Cecil, James Duncan, Gavin Hadden, Anderson Mason.
The first volume of the Stud Book was published in 1891
There were 48 stallions and 408 mares entered in the first volume of the Societies Stud Book. The earliest recorded birth is of Lion foaled in 1864.
